National Trust Membership grows to 4 million

As the economic gloom continues, many people are looking for more value on holidays and days out. In a clear sign that people are increasingly spending more time in their home country, the National Trust has announced that membership numbers have grown to four million.
The Trust manage and care for an impressive 300 historic houses, over 600,000 acres of land and 700 miles of coastline. Last year membership provided £120 million to support the upkeep, and conservation work of these properties.
More than 90 million people throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland enjoy what the National Trust has to offer each year - whether it's visiting houses and gardens, the countryside or coast.
Dame Fiona Reynolds, director general of the National Trust, said: "Whether it's a love for their local place, a passion for anything from surfing to fine art, or simply the joy of spending family time together - there's clearly a growing hunger for what we have to offer."
She added: "In England you are never more than 40 minutes away from somewhere looked after by the National Trust."
National Trust Membership statistics
In little over one generation, membership numbers have grown fourfold. In 1981, it reached one million, then two million by 1990 and three million in 2002. With the number now at four million, it's the highest it's ever been.
  • families now make up over a third of the total membership base
  • London has the most members at 300,000
  • after the capital, Surrey has the largest membership of 180,000
  • outside of the UK there are 42,571 members
